Indiana University Northwest will host the Bicycle Safety Rodeo from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 18. The annual event, now in its 11th year, will take place on the IU Northwest campus in the parking lot located at 33rd Avenue and Broadway. Children participating in the event should bring their bicycle helmet along with their bicycle.

The rodeo was created to help children and their parents become more familiar with bicycle safety regulations. Along with a safety inspection for each bicycle, the eight-point obstacle course will teach children how to maneuver and weave their bikes, as well as to mount, dismount and stop in a safe manner. Each child completing the event will receive a Bicycle Safety Rodeo certificate of achievement in the form of a personal ID card and be eligible for prizes including a free bicycle.

Plus, participants will have the opportunity to meet and interact with local law enforcement officers from the IU Northwest Police Department, and the City of Gary Police and Fire Departments, as well as other representatives from surrounding communities.

This year’s rodeo is sponsored by IU Northwest, Glen Park Weed and Seed, Gary State Farm Agent Pete Abel, and Gary 6th District Precinct Committee Members.

This event is free and open to the community. For more information, contact Mary Lee at (219) 980-6702.
