IU Northwest celebrates Communication Week April 11-16

The IU Northwest Department of Communication and the IU Northwest Communication Association invite the community to a series of free presentations in recognition of Communication Week, scheduled for April 11-16.

The events kick off with student performances in a session entitled, “Communication Means Business” at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 12 in Raintree Hall (209).

The highlight of the week is the keynote address by Mark Spencer of the Westside Theater Guild who will present “New Media and Social Movement Communication” at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 12 in the Bergland Auditorium in the Savannah Center. Also participating in the presentation will be Poet Kevin Joseph with “Unscripted.” A reception follows.

Students will present “Cultural Performance: Using Performance as a Communication Research Method,” at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, April 14 in Marram Hall (123). At 5:30 p.m., students will present “Radio: Theater of the Mind” in Hawthorn Hall (332).

Nine IU Northwest public speaking students will present their views on various social and cultural topics at the Spring Speech Forum from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, April 16 in Raintree Hall (102).

A panel of judges chosen from the university and the community score the speeches and the top three students receive plaques. A reception with refreshments will follow the speech forum.

The campus and greater Northwest Indiana community are invited to attend all Communication Week events. IU Northwest is located on Broadway Avenue, one half-mile south of I-80/94 in Gary.
