IU Northwest Lady RedHawks vie for a spot in NAIA Tourney this weekend

RedHawks to host AII postseason tourney Friday and Saturday in Savannah Center Gymnasium

Indiana University Northwest is hosting the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) postseason women’s basketball tournament this weekend, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26 in the Savannah Center Gymnasium.

The first semifinal round begins at 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 25 with Denver’s Johnson & Wales University (14-13) battling Arkansas’ Central Baptist College (13-14).

The IU Northwest RedHawks (20-8) will take on Philander Smith College (5-18) from Little Rock, Ark. in the second round, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Semifinal winners will return to the court at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 to battle for a spot at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II Championship March 9 -15 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Head Coach Ryan Shelton led the RedHawks to the 2010 A.I.I. Championship and their first-ever NAIA Tournament appearance last season. “We are proud and fortunate to be hosting the A.I.I. Women’s Basketball Championship again. We anticipate a competitive and exciting tournament; it’s a great opportunity for all off the participating teams to reach the National Tournament to compete amongst the nation’s elite teams,” said Shelton.

All 14 IU Northwest players hail from Northwest Indiana, including All-American, junior-forward Sharon Houston, a 6-foot 4-inch forward from Merrillville High School who is ranked third in the nation among women’s college basketball players. Houston leads the division in rebounds and ranks second in blocks and third in scoring.
