Today, Tuesday, Jan. 11, Indiana University Northwest was informed that Sharon Houston has been named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II women's basketball National Player of the Week. Houston is the second honoree of the 2010-11 season based on her performances from January 3 through January 9.

She was chosen out of a pool of conference player of the week selections among 16 conferences.

"This is a tremendous honor for Sharon to be recognized amongst the best players in the nation,” said IU Northwest head coach Ryan Shelton. “She deserves this recognition not only for her tremendous dedication on the court, but also for her commitment to her academics and to her teammates.

“Congratulations to Sharon; her teammates, coaches and I are very proud of her," Shelton added.

Houston, a 6’ 4” junior forward, posted a double-double in each of the three games played last week. The Merrillville native averaged 27.7 points, 20 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per contest, while shooting 60 percent from the field.

In the RedHawks 65-52 loss to Indiana University South Bend on Monday, Jan. 3, Houston posted 23 points, 21 rebounds and two blocks. She followed the loss with a 29-point, 17-rebound and three-block performance in just 20 minutes of action against USCAA’s Andrews University on Wednesday, Jan. 5. To cap it off, Houston saved the best for last, scoring 31 points, grabbing 22 rebounds and blocking eight Robert Morris University-Springfield shots.

Houston, who has led IU Northwest to an 11-5 record, currently ranks first nationally in blocks per game (3.7) and rebounds per game (16.7). She is listed second in points per game with 23.1.

This is the fourth time that the 2010 NAIA Division II All-America Third-Team selection has garnered National Player of the Week honors. She had previously earned the distinction on Jan. 6, 2009, Jan. 13, 2009 and Jan. 5, 2010.

The Lady RedHawks take on Grace Bible College tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Savannah Center.
