This spring, students and other Northwest Indiana residents who would like to escape the cold weather and learn about labor issues in a fascinating, warm-weather culture are invited to enroll in the IU Labor Studies Brazil Exchange Program, which runs from March 4 -14, 2011. Participants will spend 10 days in Brazil learning firsthand how labor groups, landless peasants, and other activists work for social and political change.

The trip will include meetings with regional and national leaders in labor and social movements, conversations with regional and national leaders of Brazil’s Workers’ Party, and the opportunity to examine firsthand the process of participatory democracy. Travelers will also visit community organizations, worker-controlled factories, unions, rural and industrial cooperatives, as well as cultural and historical sites in the southern region of Brazil.

In 2002, Brazil entered into a new phase of building popular political power. At the center of the conflict are struggles to balance the demands of global finance with the needs of the nation’s impoverished. The emergence of the Brazilian Workers’ Party, as well as the many state and local municipalities, serves as the backdrop for students to get a first-hand account of the process in which social movements play a large role in reconstructing society for the benefit of the majority.

The estimated cost of the trip is $2,800 and includes round-trip airfare, room and board, all meals, and in-country transportation. Participants may also earn three college credits for the trip by enrolling in L495 at IU Northwest during the Spring 2011 semester.

The deadline to apply for the trip is Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011.

The Labor Studies program at IU Northwest encourages members of the public to become active learners by enrolling in the program’s classes or taking advantage of its exciting travel-abroad opportunities.
