Don't get left out in the cold when winter weather leads to class cancellations or campus closures! The state-of-the-art IU Notify notification system alerts students, faculty and staff about weather-related closures or class cancellations almost instantly via email, phone call and text message!

To sign up, or to provide more current contact information, log into OneStart and follow the Emergency Notifications link located in the menu on the left side of the page. Then enter the appropriate phone numbers and email addresses and hit save.

All campus community members are urged to check their emergency numbers on file to ensure that their contact information is up to date.

Any students, faculty or staff who do not have IU Notify contact information on file through OneStart are advised to provide that information so they may receive instant notification of campus status changes. Please note, anyone who does not have emergency contact info on file electronically through OneStart will not receive IU Notify alerts.

Also, students are encouraged to sign up for the Class Cancellation Text service that automatically provides text and email notification when professors cancel classes. To sign up, follow this link:

Students with problems setting up their Class Cancellation Text can contact John Pappas at

Weather closure or cancellation information will also be posted on the IU Northwest home page at A list of media sources that will report information about IU Northwest weather cancellations and/or closings is available at the following website:

When adverse weather conditions occur between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., a decision regarding the day's status should be made and conveyed to the campus and to local media no later than 6 a.m. If evening classes need to be canceled due to daytime weather conditions, that information should be posted and reported to the media by 3 p.m.

Once closure or cancellation decisions have been made, the Office of Marketing and Communications will notify the campus via IU Notify and the home page.

In accordance with the most recent update of the IU Northwest Adverse Weather Policy, it is possible for the Chancellor or his designee to cancel classes for all or part of a school day without closing the campus. Under this policy, class cancellations and campus closures are two separate actions. The decision to take either of these actions rests with the Chancellor or his designee, the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

If classes are cancelled but campus remains open, then campus employees remain in work status. All faculty and staff are advised to listen carefully to status announcements to be certain of their work status.

All IU Northwest facilities will adhere to the cancellation and/or closing decision made for the campus. IU Northwest classes held at the Academic Learning Center in Merrillville, however, are subject to the decision of Purdue University Calumet.

Decisions about weather-related closings and cancellations will be made by the Chancellor or his designee based on campus conditions, road and highway conditions, weather forecasts provided by the National Weather Service, and other factors. Administrators and staff will provide the Chancellor with up-to-date information and recommendations as appropriate.

All IU Northwest campus community members are encouraged to use common-sense safety measures when traveling this winter. When weather issues arise, students, faculty and staff should be prepared to receive or seek out notifications from IU Northwest regarding class and campus status.

Again, students, faculty and staff who do not have current IU Notify contact information on file through OneStart are advised to provide it as soon as possible. Simply log into OneStart and click the Emergency Notifications link on the left side of the page. Then enter the correct phone numbers and email addresses.
