When Jessica Flores, a junior studying psychology and anthropology at Indiana University Northwest, watched the news and witnessed the devastation in Haiti caused by a series of massive earthquakes on January 12th, she decided she needed to help.

So as IU Northwest Student Government Association (SGA) President, Flores turned to Dr. Charles Gary, Director of the Office of Student Life and Athletics.  Together they decided to reach out to the student clubs and organizations based on the university’s campus.

“No one with a heart could see the images in the newspapers and on television and not react,” Flores said.  “Everybody wanted to help.”

The IU Northwest students had a donation table in the Moraine Student Center and at other campus locations long after the tragedy faded from the public’s attention.  Students involved spoke to fellow classmates and the faculty, hung posters around campus, and used social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter to raise awareness and collect donations.

IU Northwest students, faculty and staff contributed what they could with some donating pocket change, while others gave several dollars.  Individuals who donated $5 or more received a free Live United tee-shirt provided by the Lake Area United Way, which works with local high schools and college students encouraging them to become more involved in the non-profit’s mission.

“We told everyone that every donation, whether big or small, would make a difference in the lives of those who were affected by the devastation in Haiti,” Flores explained.

The student’s successful efforts recently came to a close when they presented a check totaling $1,101.82 to the Lake Area United Way and another check in the same amount to the American Red Cross of Northwest Indiana.

“All of those who donated felt good about helping and doing what they could,” Flores said.  “The IU Northwest community demonstrated that the spirit of giving and caring crosses all borders.”

The Lake Area United Way and the American Red Cross of Northwest Indiana will forward the students’ gifts to the United Way Worldwide Haiti Disaster Fund and the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund.  The donations will help to address the island’s long-term recovery and rebuilding needs.

“It’s heartwarming to know that IU Northwest students, faculty and staff are helping the people of Haiti with food, shelter, clothing as well as helping them to rebuild schools, hospitals and clinics,” Flores added.  “They have a long way to go, but with help comes hope.”
