In response to the growing trend of suicides among gays and lesbians around the country, Indiana University Northwest will host an event, entitled a ‘Celebration of the Gay and Lesbian Community,’ on Thursday, Oct. 7 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.  The celebratory event will take place in the Moraine Student Center.

This first hour of the event will include speeches and presentations from select IU Northwest faculty and students. The presentations will be focused on coming-out experiences, support services available to students and community members, and how to survive bullying with pride.

A showing of renowned columnist Dan Savage’s online video project ‘It Gets Better’ will also take place.  The ‘It Gets Better’ project was recently developed as a suicide prevention tool and outlet for bullied lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered youth.

Savage and his partner Terry started the video series with their own stories of being bullied with the core message that “things got better the day I left high school.” The project invites others to upload their own video to the ‘It Gets Better’ project YouTube channel.

Attendees of the ‘Celebration of the Gay and Lesbian Community’ will also develop a rainbow-colored chain made of paper links. Individuals are encouraged to write a short message, or words of inspiration, on each link.

The ‘Celebration of the Gay and Lesbian Community’ is sponsored by the IU Northwest organization Rainbow Connectionz, the Women's and Gender Studies program, and the Office of Student Life and Athletics.

Currently, the ‘It Gets Better’ project has hundreds of inspiring videos of people sharing their stories with the world. To access the ‘It Gets Better’ YouTube channel, visit http://www.youtube.com/itgetsbetterproject#p/f/0/7IcVyvg2Qlo.
