Data Privacy Day is an international celebration of the dignity of the individual expressed through personal information.
In this networked world, in which citizens are thoroughly digitized, with identities, locations, actions, purchases, associations, movements, and histories stored as so many bits and bytes, it's important to ask:
· Who is collecting all of this?
· What are they doing with it?
· With whom are they sharing it?
· How can I protect my information from being misused?
· How can I protect other people’s privacy when I work with personally identifiable information in my job?
· What’s all this hype about encryption?
Indiana University will host Data Privacy Day events on Thursday, Jan. 28, to learn the answers to those questions, and more! Speakers include:
· Joan S. Antokol, Partner, Baker & Daniels, LLP, and recognized internationally for her work in privacy and data protection
· Roland Coté, IU Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Registrar
· Sterling George, Director, IU Financial Systems Administration and Records Management
· Leslie Pfeffer, Compliance Projects Manager, IU Office of Health Care Billing & HIPAA Programs
· Dan Rives, IU Associate Vice President, University Human Resource Services
Attendees will also hear from IT security experts on how to protect data on computers (especially those laptops!), and about how to find balance between privacy and the use of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter.
Best of all, students, faculty and staff can attend IN PERSON or ONLINE!
Sessions will originate from the Indiana Memorial Union Building in Bloomington, and be broadcast live on the Internet via Adobe Connect - all that is needed is a web browser with the Flash plug-in, and an Internet connection. (More instructions will be provided on the web site closer to the event.)
Data Privacy Day at IU offers session topics for everyone throughout the day, but participants should feel free to come and go.
