IU Northwest faculty member injured in traffic accident on Broadway

Police urge campus community to use extreme caution when crossing streets

An Indiana University Northwest faculty member was injured Monday, Nov. 23, when he was struck by a northbound vehicle as he was crossing Broadway.

Professor of English and Department Chair George Bodmer, Ph.D., was transported to Methodist Hospitals by paramedics following the accident, which took place shortly before 5 p.m. On Tuesday, he was reported as being in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Campus police have urged all faculty, staff and students to use extreme caution when crossing Broadway or any other street on or adjacent to campus. As winter approaches and the days shorten, more people will be crossing busy streets after dark, when motorists may not able to see pedestrian traffic.

All pedestrians are instructed to utilize the designated Pedestrian Crossing paths located at the flashing yellow light on the corner of 34th and Broadway, and the Automatic Traffic Signal located at 35th and Broadway.

Even when using these crossing areas, pedestrians must be very aware of speeding traffic and recognize that drivers may not see them in time to slow down or stop.

IU Northwest extends best wishes to Dr. Bodmer for a speedy recovery and encourages all members of the campus community to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
