The Indiana University School of Medicine - Northwest received a high-profile visit on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 1st District U.S. Rep Pete Visclosky (D-Merrillville).

The Congressman toured the med school's labs in the Dunes Medical/Professional Building and a chemistry lab in Marram Hall, where the university's latest research equipment is housed. Med school and chemistry faculty gave demonstrations of the technology, for which Visclosky secured approximately $500,000 in an appropriations bill last year.

In a recent feature on efforts to revitalize the City of Gary, Chicago Public Radio interviewed IU Northwest Associate Professor of Minority Studies Earl Jones, Ph.D., about his ongoing Historic Midtown Project, which seeks to identify, preserve and restore significant historical and cultural sites in the city's Midtown district.

Jones, who was also involved in a recent effort by the Planning and the Black Community Division of the American Planning Association to craft a plan for revitalizing Gary's Broadway corridor, spoke to the importance of saving and restoring Gary's cultural sites amid calls for wholesale demolition of abandoned city buildings. IU Northwest Professor Emeritus of History Ronald Cohen, Ph.D., was also interviewed by Chicago Public Radio as part of the story.
