The Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, Nov. 7, edging region rival Purdue Calumet 89-88 on a bucket from senior Jesse Howell with seven seconds remaining in the game.
The RedHawks had opened the season the night before with a 115-110 loss to East-West University in the opening round of the annual Kettle Classic at Purdue's Hammond campus. The Peregrines lost their opener to Indiana Wesleyan 90-55 the same night.
The RedHawks had trailed for much of the PUC game, but Howell and Pete Trgovich III, who scored 29 points, kept their team in it until the end, when Howell's go-ahead bucket sealed the victory for IU Northwest.
The RedHawks are coming off a 20-win season in 2008-09, and last weekend's tournament was a good test for the team as they begin the quest to repeat that success again this season. The RedHawks' first home game will be on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
