Fall Semester 2009 begins on Monday, Aug. 31, at Indiana University Northwest. As new and returning students prepare to come to campus, the IU Northwest Police Department is advising some common-sense measures that everyone can take to ensure a safe and successful academic year.
These Safety Reminder Tips include:
LOCK YOUR VEHICLE doors upon exiting your vehicle.
DO NOT LEAVE any item(s) of value in plain view (i.e. purse, iPod, camera, computer, etc.). All items of value should be placed out of sight prior to your arrival on campus.
DO NOT LEAVE items of value inside classrooms unattended.
SECURE YOUR PROPERTY! Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to secure personal property within their offices and to lock office doors upon exiting (even if you are just down the hall or next door).
OBSERVE SPEED LIMITS! The speed limit through the campus parking lots is 5 to 10 mph and will be strictly enforced. Violators will be ticketed.
USE CAUTION when entering and exiting our campus lot driveways. Be vigilant when driving through any parking lot aisle or exiting from a parking space, in order to avoid collision with a pedestrian or another vehicle.
REQUEST POLICE ESCORTS. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to contact the IUNPD to request escorts to your vehicle. Upon notification, an officer will be dispatched to your location and will walk with you to your vehicle.
USE EXTREME CAUTION when crossing the street from remote campus parking lots and surrounding area streets. Please utilize the designated Pedestrian Crossing paths located at the flashing yellow light on the corner of 34th and Broadway, and at the Automatic Traffic Signal located at 35th and Broadway. Remember that motorists have the right of way.
DO NOT PARK AT GLEASON GOLF COURSE! Gleason Golf Course is not the property of IU Northwest. Vehicles parked in the Gleason lot are subject to be towed at the owners expense. Also, students, faculty and staff should avoid parking in the Residential Areas.
REPORT ALL SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY TO POLICE IMMEDIATELY! Contact the IUNPD at (219) 980-6501.
The IU Northwest Police Department welcomes all new and returning faculty, staff and students to campus for the 2009-2010 academic year. Everyone is asked to remember that safety is not just the responsibility of the police. The entire campus community must take part in ensuring a safe working and learning environment.
