The Indiana University Northwest Office of Student Life and Athletics announced on April 29 that assistant baseball coach Dan Soria has been named the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the 2009 season. Soria, who is in his first year with the RedHawks, replaces outgoing coach Bob Lucas, who was relieved of his duties with the team this week.
IU Northwest Director of Student Life and Athletics Charles Gary, Ph.D., praised Lucas’s contributions to the RedHawk baseball program since taking over as coach before the 2008 season.
“He did everything we asked him to do,” Gary said. “We just felt it was time to take the team in a different direction. I thank Coach Lucas for his many valuable contributions to our athletic program, and I wish him the very best.”
The RedHawks are 1-19 this season with four games remaining.
Soria is an East Chicago Central grad who played college baseball at South Suburban College and at Chicago State University, where he also served as assistant coach in 2007-08. Soria was the head baseball coach for Calumet College of St. Joseph from 2004 until 2007. He played for the Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2003 and 2004.
