Indiana University Northwest freshman volleyball standout Lisa Saberniak has been named to the NAIA Association of Independent Institutions All-Conference Team, the university announced this week. Merrillville grad Saberniak, a 5-foot, 8-inch OH/MH for the IU Northwest Lady RedHawks, led the team to a 13-17 season, its best record ever.
Saberniak was a fan favorite this season and led the Lady RedHawks in every offensive category. Coach Omar Vasquez said that the undersized Saberniak probably constituted “half of our offense” this season.
“She’s an outstanding player, very efficient on offense,” Vasquez said. “She has an excellent work ethic and she’s a great competitor. We need more like her.”
In 13 home matches this season, Saberniak notched 129 kills on 321 total attacks, with an attack percentage of .259, far and away the highest on the team. She also excelled defensively, with 111 digs in 13 home matches, 36 more than her nearest teammate. (Stats for the Lady RedHawks’ away matches were not available.)
Vasquez said that Saberniak, who is an education major, benefited from her familiarity with skilled freshman setter Ashley Contreras; the two were teammates at Merrillville. Contreras logged 240 assists in 13 home matches this year.
The Lady Redhawks finished the season ranked 5th in the NAIA Association of Independent Institutions. The team was also ranked No. 15 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
