Lady RedHawks beat Ashford University 65-58

Houston scores 28, Wills adds 15 as teams runs record to 5-1

The Indiana University Northwest Lady RedHawks continued their hot start Tuesday night against Ashford University, overcoming an early six-point deficit to defeat the Lady Saints 65-58 and run their season record to 5-1.

Freshman forward Sharon Houston, last week’s USCAA National Player of the Week, continued to lead the RedHawks on both ends of the court, scoring 28 points, grabbing 18 rebounds and blocking eight shots. Guard Nina Wills added 15 points in another strong performance.

The Lady RedHawks played tenacious team defense down the stretch to hold off a potential Ashford rally, after leading by as many as 15 points in the second half.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, the Lady RedHawks survived a rally by Judson University to win 59-58. A free throw by Houston in the final seconds broke the tie after IU Northwest surrendered an eight-point lead with 90 seconds to play.

“Although we have a young team, we’re gaining experience with each game while winning at the same time,” said second-year head coach Ryan Shelton. “This is an exciting team, and we hope people will continue to come out and see us play.”

After dropping a preseason scrimmage in October to South Suburban College, the Lady RedHawks have now won their first four games at home and are 1-1 on the road.

IU Northwest’s next game is also at home, on Friday, Nov. 21, starting at 7 p.m. against Wright College. They play again at home on Monday, Nov. 24, starting at 7 p.m. versus undefeated University of Michigan – Dearborn, then travel to Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 29, to play Marian College. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. local time.
