Indiana University Northwest will hold its 42nd Annual Commencement on Thursday, May 8, 2008, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Gary Genesis Convention Center, located just off Broadway between 4th and 5th Avenues at One Genesis Center Plaza in Gary, Ind. The university will confer 784 degrees this year.
IU President Michael McRobbie, who took office last summer as Indiana University’s 18th president, will make his first IU Northwest commencement address. He and IU Northwest Chancellor Bruce Bergland will award degrees to the many undergraduate, graduate and continuing education students who have completed this stretch of their educational journey.
Family members, friends and supporters are encouraged to attend this important event in honor of the students who have worked so hard to achieve this noteworthy milestone in their lives. The IU Northwest Commencement is open to the public and tickets are not required.
Free parking will be available in the Chase parking garage and surrounding lots, and handicapped parking will be available adjacent to the Genesis Center. Parking areas will be marked with signage. The Gary Police Department will also be on hand to assist with traffic control.
Students and faculty are encouraged to arrive at the Genesis Center no later than 2:30 p.m. Graduation candidates should be robed and ready to assemble at 3 p.m.
Also, any guests who require special accommodations due to physical challenges or hearing or visual impairments are encouraged to arrive early. There will be reserved seating in Section 112 for hearing or visually impaired guests. Wheelchair-accessible seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis in the Main Level Arena.
Graduates and guests are also asked to consider the current I-65 construction closures when planning their route to the event. I-65 is closed between I 80/94 and 15th Avenue.
IU Northwest congratulates all of this year’s graduates and their families for this outstanding accomplishment. For more information about the 42nd Annual IU Northwest Commencement, contact the Office of University Relations at (219) 980-6800.
