Acclaimed political cartoonist to visit IU Northwest on March 26

Artist has covered eight political conventions, been published in Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Sports Illustrated

On Wednesday, March 26, the Indiana University Northwest Student Activities Board will sponsor a presentation and book signing by acclaimed political cartoonist Steve Brodner.

This award-winning satirical illustrator has been published in nearly every major publication in the United States, including Esquire, Playboy, National Lampoon, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The Nation, and the New York Times Book Review, among others. IU Northwest is pleased to bring this accomplished artist, author and caricaturist to Northwest Indiana for an insightful look at the past, present and future of political cartoons.

The event will take place in the Savannah Center Auditorium, located in the southeast corner of the main campus parking lot at 33rd Avenue and Broadway in Gary, Ind., beginning at 5 p.m. A book signing and reception will follow Brodner’s formal remarks. This free program is open to the Northwest Indiana community.

Brodner’s freelance career in illustration began in 1977, when the New York Times Book Review began tapping him for illustration assignments. He later became a regular contributor to Harper’s magazine with the monthly feature “Ars Politica.” Esquire made him its unofficial house artist in 1988, and there he did portrait caricature, art journalism and a back-page political cartoon, “Adversaria.”

Brodner has covered eight political conventions with visual essays for various national publications, and the subjects of his witty and incisive art have included such national figures as Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Patrick Buchanan, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama. His books include “Fold ‘N Tuck” and “Freedom Fries: The Political Art of Steve Brodner.” From 1992 until 1997, Brodner’s weekly feature, “Tomorrow’s News Tonight,” was syndicated nationally. In 1998, Brodner designed the poster for Warren Beatty’s political satire “Bulworth.”

Brodner has won awards from the Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Communication Arts, the Society of Newspaper Design, and the Society of Publication Design. He is also the recipient of the 2000 Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism.

In the midst of this historic election season, IU Northwest invites the Northwest Indiana community to visit campus on March 26 and see the world of politics through the eyes of one of the country’s most talented and insightful political cartoonists.
