IU Northwest School of Business & Economics to unveil simulated stock trading program March 7

Media invited to try out software during March 7 open house, dedication; floor will be available for use by business community, high school teachers

The Indiana University Northwest School of Business & Economics will host a dedication ceremony March 7 for its new simulated trading floor program, which will be used to educate IU Northwest students, area teachers and the community about the ins and outs of commodities trading.

Northwest Indiana and Chicago-area media representatives are invited to attend the open house and try the simulated trading program for themselves, starting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7. The program’s creator will be on hand to explain the software and its uses. Officials from the School of Business and Economics will be available to explain the new program’s role in business curriculum and in the school’s Center for Economic Education, which works to expand financial literacy in Northwest Indiana.

The trading floor includes two digital stock tickers, a large TV screen tuned to the financial new channels, and an actual trading room where students can “play the market” using the simulated trading program. Dean Anna Rominger of the School of Business & Economics said the program reflects the business school’s commitment to promoting business education not only for its students but also for the surrounding community.

“This is a wonderful program because it will allow people who do not know that much about the stock market to learn how it all works,” Rominger said.

Rominger noted that, as a business school accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the IU Northwest business school must bring new and innovative learning programs and methods to campus to maintain its standard of excellence and its competitive edge in the marketplace.

The dean also said that the school’s new trading floor will help further IU Northwest’s commitment to serving as an active member of the Northwest Indiana economy. The floor will be available to local businesses for the purpose of training their employees in asset management.

“This will be an important part of our Center for Economic Education,” Rominger said. “This trading floor is another example of our commitment to provide the highest-quality business education for IU Northwest students and the highest-quality service to the Northwest Indiana community in the area of financial literacy”

As part of its introduction of this exciting new program to the community, the School of Business & Economics will host an open house and dedication ceremony that will include hands-on demonstrations of the software. Media representatives, and particularly business reporters, are encouraged to come test the system for themselves and see if they have what it takes to be a day trader on the School of Business and Economics Trading Floor.

Press demonstrations of the simulated trading program will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 at the IU School of Business and Economics, located on the first floor of the Dunes Medical/Professional Building on the IU Northwest campus, 3400 Broadway in Gary. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m.
