The ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively is a crucial attribute for anyone who occupies a leadership position in any business or organization. At the Indiana University Northwest Institute for Innovative Leadership, two upcoming half-day workshops seek to help local leaders refine their communication skills to achieve even greater professional results.
On Thursday, Jan. 25, professional business coach and consultant Tom Heitz will demystify the potentially terrifying act of public speaking. Heitz, a Munster resident who frequently provides communication coaching to professional clients in a variety of fields, will teach participants how to overcome their fears, build greater confidence, and capitalize on their strengths to deliver stronger, more self-assured speeches and presentations.
If you live in dread of that next Chamber of Commerce speech or boardroom presentation, or if you’re just looking to put a little more polish on your delivery, Heitz’s workshop, “Effective Public Speaking,” can help you find the extra edge necessary to make your next public address a smooth and memorable one.
On Saturday, Feb. 10, the emphasis will shift from the spoken word to the written word as Geogre Miga, interim director of the IU Northwest Center for Management Development, presents “Writing for Impact,” a workshop designed to help participants harness the power of their own words and produce professional writing that yields results. Miga will demonstrate techniques for grabbing readers’ attention and establishing instant rapport with them, and he will show participants how to weed excess words and useless jargon from their writing.
If you would like for your documents, reports, e-mails, and professional correspondence to strike just the right note with your readers, this interactive workshop will help you achieve that goal. Miga is a successful management consultant who has taught at the IU Northwest School of Business and Economics since 1997.
“Effective Public Speaking” will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25 in Room 105 A of the IU Northwest Library Conference Center. “Writing for Impact” will be held Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. in Room 333 of Hawthorn Hall. Each workshop costs $50. This fee usually can be tax-deducted as a continuing-education expense.
