Indiana University Northwest is proud to anounce that we will host a delegation of government leaders from Free State Province, South Africa on our campus on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The visit comes as part of the delegation’s week-long trip to Indiana and Chicago, during which Free State’s premier and cabinet members will discuss with local, state and university officials issues of economic development, intergovernmental cooperation, urban policy, and other matters of common interest.
Leading the Free State delegation will be Premier Frances Beatrice Marshoff, the political leader of the province of Free State, and Modise Casalis “Casca” Mokitlane, the Member of Executive Council for Agriculture. Marshoff, Mokitlane and other Free State officials will make IU Northwest their first stop on a week-long fact-finding journey that will also take them to Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis and the office of Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, among other destinations.
The South African delegation hopes to establish a cooperative relationship between IU and the Free State university system on issues like public administration and governance. Free State officials also will meet with Daniels and other state officials to discuss potential economic and development partnerships.
At IU Northwest, the delegation will have lunch with University and Gary city officials at 12 p.m. in the Library Conference Center at 3400 Broadway in Gary, Ind. This will be followed by a presentation to the delegation from Gary Mayor Rudolph Clay and other city officials at 12:45. Delegation members will have the opportunity to make remarks at 1:15 p.m., followed by a presentation from IU Northwest officials at 1:45 p.m. and a campus tour at 2 p.m. The Free State delegation is scheduled to depart IU Northwest at 2:30 p.m.
IU Northwest welcomes the local media to cover this visit to our state and our campus on Nov. 14 by the esteemed leaders of the Free State Province of South Africa. We believe that such intercultural exchanges are beneficial for the hosts as well as the visitors, and we look forward to sharing with delegation members the many exciting developments and initiatives that are underway at IU Northwest and in the city of Gary.
If you would like to cover any part of the Free State delegation’s visit to IU Northwest, please contact media relations specialist Christopher Sheid at (219) 980-6802. Because of the tight time schedule, there will be only limited opportunities for one-on-one interviews with Premier Marshoff and other Free State officials; however, members of the media are welcome to sit in on any of the planned discussions and presentations.
IU Northwest is the only Northwest Indiana stop scheduled for the Free State delegation. We hope you will be able to bring news of this significant international visit to local audiences.
