Lady RedHawks to host open tryouts for hoops players

The IU Northwest Lady RedHawks basketball team is looking for some good players who are willing to work hard and commit to an up-and-coming college program. The team will hold open tryouts for the new season on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 12 p.m. in the Savannah Center gymnasium.

All registered and eligible students are encouraged to attend this tryout session. First-year coach Melvin Kilgore said hes hoping to see 15 or 20 students turn out for the event. At minimum, Kilgore said, he needs another three or four players to complement his squad of returning veterans and new recruits.

The coach noted that, in the past several years, eligibility issues and fluctuating levels of interest have limited participation on the team, making it a challenge to field a full squad. Kilgore has experienced some of those same concerns this summer; several potential recruits have had second thoughts about playing, while several committed players may be ineligible. Kilgore said his roster already features several players with size, but noted that hell be looking at all positions during tryouts.

I have five players who are in school, but who have said they dont want to play, Kilgore said. Im going to talk to them again and see if I can get some of them to commit. If I can get three or four from the tryouts, I think well be all right. I want to make sure that we have at least 12 players.

Kilgore emphasized that players at tryouts must be eligible to play this season, academically and otherwise.

The Lady RedHawks are an NAIA Division II team. Opponents for the 2006-07 season include Purdue University Calumet and Calumet College of St. Joseph.

For more information, call Coach Kilgore at (219) 980-6793 or at (219) 980-6746, or e-mail him kilgorem@iun.edu. Kilgore encouraged competitors to show up Sept. 16 ready to work hard and demonstrate their abilities.

Be on time and ready to play, he said.
