Roundtable to explore land use strategies for Indiana’s Lake Michigan coast

Coastal Connection 2006 Land Use Roundtable, Thurs., Apr. 27

Nearly 60 key decision makers whose work directly or indirectly affects land use, protection and/or redevelopment in northwest Indiana will participate in a one-day, invitation-only event titled Coastal Connections 2006 Land Use Roundtable: Strategies for Linking Redevelopment and Green Space Protection in Northwest Indiana on Thurs., Apr. 27, 8:30 a.m. in the Library Conference Center at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Ind.

The roundtable will consider issues and opportunities for urban revitalization, open space protection and linkages between the two, with particular attention to the potential of the state’s Lake Michigan coastal region. Participants, including mayors, state and federal legislators, local planning officials, professional associations and state agency officials, among others, will learn how past projects have benefited local communities and about opportunities to build on successes and advance recent initiatives. In addition, participants will hear about the latest Indiana policy developments related to land protection and redevelopment and have an opportunity to discuss and evaluate these policy options. Immediately following the roundtable, all participants are invited to attend a reception at the IU Northwest Savannah Center hosted by the IU Northwest Center for Regional Excellence.

The roundtable, co-sponsored by the Great Lakes Commission and the Indiana University Northwest School of Public and Environmental Affairs, will provide direction for state, regional and local decision makers toward enhancing the sustainability of northwest Indiana.

Welcoming remarks will be offered by Kyle Hupfer, chair of the Indiana Delegation to the Great Lakes Commission and director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Tim Sanders, executive director of the newly created Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, will give the luncheon keynote address.
