Adults and children from northwest Indiana will participate in the annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo on Saturday, June 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Indiana University Northwest.
The Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be held in IU Northwest’s East Parking Lot at 33rd Ave. and Broadway. Children participating in the event should bring their bicycle helmet along with their bicycle.
The rodeo was created to help children and their parents become more familiar with bicycle safety regulations. Along with a safety inspection for each bicycle, the eight-point obstacle course will teach children how to maneuver and weave their bikes, as well as to mount, dismount and stop in a safe manner. Each child completing the event will receive a Bicycle Safety Rodeo certificate of achievement in the form of a personal ID card and be eligible for prizes including a free bicycle.
Plus, participants will have the opportunity to meet and interact with local law enforcement officers from Indiana University Northwest, Lake County Sheriff's Department and City of Gary Police Department as well as other representatives from surrounding communities.
This year's rodeo is sponsored by Gary State Farm Agent - Pete Abel, The Glen Park Community Development Corporation, Indiana University Northwest, City of Gary Environmental Affairs, Park Department & General Services Department, Calumet Citizen for Connecting Communities, and Gary 6th District Precinct Committee Members
This event is free and open to the community. For more information, contact Mary F. Lee at (219) 980-6702.
