Keynote speaker addresses media trends during annual Communication Week

The Indiana University Department of Communication is sponsoring its annual Communication Week from April 11-15, 2005. This year’s theme is "Communication at the Crossroads: Issues of Diversity and Convergence."

The keynote speaker is Rebecca Lind, Ph.D., associate professor of communication, University of Illinois at Chicago. She will speak on, "Media

Trends: Building Bridges or Barriers?," from 7 - 8:30 p.m. in Raintree Hall, room 102, with a public reception to follow in the Tamarack Hall lobby.

Lind’s main area of research concerns race and gender issues in the media.

Additionally, she has examined media audiences, journalism and ethics. She has multiple publications on these topics, included in the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, the Journal of Radio Studies, Human Communication Research, the Journal of Broadcasting, Political Communication and others. Her most recent works

(forthcoming) include work on, "The framing of feminists and feminism in news and public affairs programs in U.S. Electronic Media," "Competing ethos:

Reliance on profit versus social responsibility by laypeople planning a TV newscast" and "A computer content analysis of candidates' gender related electronic news story content in relation to tracking polls."
