At a press conference to be held at IU Northwest in Gary, Lt. Gov. Joseph E. Kernan will announce the Indiana Department of Commerce’s new Region One director and office location.
The announcement will take place at 3 p.m., tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at Indiana University Northwest, Library Conference Center in Gary. Region One includes Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter counties. In partnering with IU Northwest, the new office will be housed in the Library Conference Center located at 3500 Broadway and is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
“We are fortunate to have an outstanding network of higher education institutions because they play a crucial role in economic development,” said Lieutenant Governor Joseph E. Kernan, director of the Indiana Department of Commerce. “Putting this regional office at IU Northwest makes sense – this gives us another opportunity to work with a quality institution in which we share a common goal – the improvement of citizens’ lives. We are excited about the new location and look forward to a great relationship with IU Northwest.”
Lt. Governor Kernan announced plans to modernize the Department of Commerce in July after more than a year and a half of research. The reorganization creates 12 new field offices to better serve the individual needs of Indiana’s various economies. The new regional offices will be located in Gary, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Terre Haute, Bloomington, Madison, Evansville and New Albany. The existing Indianapolis office will serve as both a regional office and central headquarters. Each office will serve between four and 11 counties, acting as a “one-stop” shop for all economic development activities.
“We are pleased that the Indiana Department of Commerce has chosen IU Northwest as the location for its Region One office. As part of the University’s ‘Shared Vision’, we are committed to cultivating partnerships with government, industry, business and education entities to help further the quality of life for the residents of northwest Indiana”, said IU Northwest Chancellor Bruce Bergland.
