IUN Students to Host Environmental Awareness Week

Indiana University Northwest will be turning green the week of April 20-27 to celebrate Environmental Awareness Week. The universityís Environmental Action Committee, comprised of faculty, staff and students, have planned a week of festivities focusing on the challenges facing the confined disposal facility being planned in East Chicago, as well as its commitment towards sustainable living and environmental awareness. The events will feature speakers, videos, nature walks, a community forum, and information on the environment.

COMMUNITY FORUM, Saturday, April 20

Environmental Awareness Week will begin on Saturday, April 20 with "Environmental Justice in Our Communities." The forum will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Savannah Center Auditorium on campus.

EARTH DAY, Monday, April 22

Monday, April 22, Environmental Action Committee members will participate in Earth Day by hosting information sessions on issues protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from drilling and National Forests from logging. Information booths will feature local businesses and environmental organizations including Staples, Inc., along with information on genetically engineered food. This all-day event will be held outside in the courtyard in front of Hawthorn Hall on campus.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC VIDEO, Monday & Tuesday, April 22 & 23

On Monday and Tuesday evening, IUN will show the video "Jane Goodall: My Life With The Chimpanzees" in the Library Conference Center, Room A. The National Geographic documentary of the renowned conservationist covers several years of Dr. Goodallís life in Gombe, Africa where she studied chimpanzees.

NATURE WALK, Saturday, April 27

"Walk for Parks" is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m., at the Gibson Woods Nature Preserve in Hammond. The proceeds for the walk will go towards park improvements and a wildlife viewing area at the Environmental Awareness Center.

All events are free and open to the community

Environmental Awareness Week is sponsored by the NW Indiana Environmental Justice Partnership. Other participants include the IUN School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), Grand Cal Task Force, Hoosier Environmental Council, Sierra Club, and Indiana Dunes Learning Center.
