IU Northwest Hosts Annual Calumet Heritage Conference

Indiana University Northwest will host the third annual Calumet Heritage Conference Rails and Tales: Celebrating Our Railroad Heritage, a celebration of our railroad heritage and the various groups and historical organizations working to preserve the Calumet region. 

Rails and Tales: Celebrating Our Railroad Heritage Conference will take place on Saturday, October 6 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Savannah Center at Indiana University Northwest. An optional bus tour will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.    

The conference provides an opportunity to become more familiar with the diverse coalition of environmental, cultural and historical organizations, individuals, libraries, educational institutions, municipalities and government agencies.  

Individuals and organizations participating in the program include:

  • George Pullman and His Dream Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, Alvin Pooler, Historic Pullman Foundation
  • Celebrating Our Railroad heritage: A Ninety Mile Museum, John P. Hankey, South Shore Line Museum Task Force
  • When the Railroad Leaves Town: American Communities in the Age of Rail Line Abandonment, Joseph Schwieterman, Ph.D., DePaul University
  • A Railroad Legacy: Rails, Trails, and Natural Areas, Gerald Adelmann, Executive Director, Openlands Project
  • Planning High Speed Rails For the Future, Roger Sims, president, Indiana High Speed Rail Association
