PBS will host a 4-hour documentary School: The Story of American Public Education on September 18 and 19 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Channel 56. Following the series, four IU Northwest professors will then participate in a panel discussion on Gary and Northwest Indianaís role in the history of education, as well as discuss present and future local and national educational issues.
The panel discussion will be held on Thursday, September 27 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Savannah Center Auditorium. The panel is comprised of History professor Ronald Cohen, and Education Professors Pam Sandoval, Stacy Akyea and Doc Holliday. The panel discussion focuses on the democratic nature and pragmatics of education. Topics involve race, class, gender, diversity, and curricula including testing in rural and urban schools in Northwest Indiana"
