A police helicopter, canine units, bike patrols and a fire truck will be on hand to promote bicycle safety for children at the Third Annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo on June 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Indiana University Northwest. Sponsored by the university, the Glen Park Community Development Corporation (CDC) and Gary State Farm Insurance, the event will include a safety inspection and an eight-point obstacle course for bicycles.
The rodeo was created to help children and their parents become more familiar with bicycle safety regulations. Along with a safety inspection for each bicycle, the eight-point obstacle course will teach children how to maneuver and weave their bikes, as well as to mount, dismount and stop in a safe manner. Each child completing the event will receive a Bicycle Safety Rodeo certificate of achievement in the form of a personal ID card.
The Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be in IU Northwest’s East Parking Lot at 33rd Ave. and Broadway and is open to the community free of charge. Children participating in the event should bring their bicycle helmet. For more information on the Bicycle Rodeo call 219-980-6702 or 219-884-5790.
