The Northwest Wizards will host a girl's AAU 17U & 18U basketball tournament on Saturday, May 19th (6-10 p.m.) and Sunday, May 20th (8-5 p.m.) at Indiana University Northwest, Savannah Center. Competing clubs in the tournament will represent several communities from Northwest Indiana and other parts of the state as well as teams from neighboring Illinois.
Indiana University Northwest strives to fulfill its mission of reaching out to surrounding communities by hosting this tournament. With a new gymnasium (the Savannah Center) and basketball programs for both men and women, IUN hopes to attract more high school athletes and provide a successful collegiate athletic and academic career. This tournament will allow all participants and spectators to view the campus and the basketball facilities and see that IUN is living its Shared Vision philosophy.
The Northwest Wizards are an AAU Girl's 17U basketball club with players from Calumet, Hebron, Highland, Hobart, LaPorte, Merrillville, Michigan City and Valparaiso. Wizards' head coach Jim Nelson and assistant coach Tony Scheub, also serve as assistant coaches with the IUN RedHawks men's basketball team. Also coaching with the Wizards: IUN student Matt Welches; Morton High School cross-country coach Karrie Phillips.
Concessions for the tournament will be provided by student club HYPE (Helping Young People through Education). This IUN student organization tutors children at Duncan Elementary School and also mentors Lew Wallace high school students. Proceeds will help to further HYPE's educational outreach efforts in the communities.
