Indiana University Northwest is offering PharmacyTechnician Training, Unit Secretary for the medical field, and Medical Terminology at their Schererville campus location during March.
Offered by the university’s Division of Continuing Studies and Condensed Curriculum, Inc, the Pharmacy Technician Training will prepare individuals to enter the pharmacy technician field in hospitals, and home infusion or retail pharmacies,while working under the supervision of a pharmacist. Course content willinclude medical terminology specific to pharmacy, the reading and interpretationof prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names.
Students will learn to prepare IV admixtures, dosage calculation, drug,compounding, dose conversions, flow rates and delivery systems. Dispensingof prescriptions, unit dose, inventory control, billing and reimbursementwill also be discussed. The class will conclude with job search skills.
The course will be on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning March 20 throughJune 7, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A GED or high school diploma is requiredto take the course.
Unit Secretary for the medical field will be on Tuesdays, March21 through May 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the IU Northwest Schererville site.During the eight-week course, individuals will learn medical terminology,and study internal systems, legal aspects of charting, departmental relationships,effective communications, and the role of hospital unit secretaries inmedical emergencies.
The unit secretary course will also focus on time management, organizationalskills, case histories, and simulations to depict data and medical transcriptions.
A Medical Terminology course will also be offered at the sitefor eight-weeks on Thursdays, March 28 through May 16 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.The class is for individuals seeking employment in the medical field orfor those interested in understanding the language spoken by physicians.During the course, the instructor will work with the student in simplifyingmedical words and in understanding their meaning.
Both the Unit Secretary and Medical Terminology courses are recommendedby local hospitals for employment. Graduation from high school, college,or admission to college is not required.
