Dr. Ellen Szarleta will join the Indiana University Northwest School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) as assistant professor this month. A resident of Merrillville, Szarleta served as a visiting assistant professor during the 1998-99 academic year.
In joining the SPEA team, Szarleta will continue developing the environmental affairs curriculum at the university and will take the lead in the Small Communities Outreach Project for Environmental Issues (SCOPe), a project of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). While working with the project which is funded through a cooperative agreement with the EPA, Szarleta will elicit values and concerns of area small communities in order to minimize the adverse impact of environmental rulemaking.
Szarleta, who has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, cum laude, from the University of Iowa, also introduced a new course last spring to the SPEA program titled, Environmental Crime.
