Steward comes to the university from State University of New York College at Fredonia where he served as chief information officer. Prior to his New York position, Steward served as associate director of telecommunications at The George Washington University in Washington D.C. for 12 years. He also served as staff supervisor at Bell Atlantic Management Services Inc. and at Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia. For seven years, Steward served in the United States Navy as a nuclear power plant instructor at Knowles Atomic Power Laboratory and on both diesel and nuclear submarines in the engineering department.

Steward received his Ed.D. in higher education administration and a M.S.S.S. in telecommunications policy from The George Washington University. He also has a BS in engineering technology from Florida International University.
Residing in Crown Point, Steward and his wife, Karen have 5 children and 3 grandchildren.
