Center for Economic Education Receives Clarkson Award

The Center for Economic Education at Indiana University Northwest recently received the 1999 Massey Clarkson Jr. Stock Market Game of the Year Award at the Stock Market Game Symposium in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Presented for “outstanding Stock Market Game teacher training program,” the award is based primarily on materials developed for the 1998-1999 Indiana Stock Market Game Advisor’s Manual. Distributed statewide by the Indiana Council for Economic Education, the manual represents the work of Chris McGrew, economic education consultant at the Indiana Department of Education;  Dr. Harlan Day, executive director of the Indiana Council of Economic Education;  and Dr. Gary Lynch, professor of economics and director of the Center for Economic Education at IU Northwest, as well as the Indiana Stock Market Game.

The advisor’s manual is over 300 pages and contains information on playing the game and includes activities teachers can use in presenting it to their students. The manual also has a section on securities regulation from the Indiana Secretary of State Securities Division, including a long-term simulation and information on other types of investments besides stocks.

A national award, the Clarkson is given in honor of the late L. Massey Clarkson, an executive of the Securities Industry and recognizes outstanding contributions from the Stock Market Game.

“We are very pleased to share this award with the Indiana Council of Economic Education – and with Chris McGrew,” says Lynch. “This is the third time in 10 years that we have received recognition from the securities industry.”

Lynch also adds that a substantial portion of the funding for the development of the advisor’s manual came from the Indiana Secretary of State office and its Securities Division. The Indiana Council of Economic Education and its affiliated Centers also receive support from foundations, business, labor and private donations.
