State Trooper Joins IU Northwest as Police Director

Indiana University Northwest recently announced Denson Chatfield, Jr. of East Chicago as the new Director of Campus Police and Public Safety.

Chatfield comes to the university after serving 23 years with the Indiana State Police where he worked in various districts including the Toll Road District in Lake County, the Lowell District and the Seymour District south of Indianapolis. He also spent several months at the FBI Academy in Quantico.

Chatfield graduated from West Side High School in Gary in 1972 and was drafted into the Airforce. Serving active duty from 1972 to 1975, Chatfield was stationed in Puerto Rico and assumed administrative and management assignments. During that time, he was also selected to become a member of the Honor Guard and worked presidential detail.

After three years of active duty, Chatfield returned home to Northwest Indiana but continued his relationship with the military by serving in the U.S. Airforce active reserves for nine years. During his tenure as a state trooper, Chatfield has served on a number of federal and state task force teams, including GRIT (Gary Response Investigative Team).

The father of three children, Yolanda, 24, Rodney, 23 and Cherisse, 22, Chatfield has an MA in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University, and a BA in Organizational Management and a BA in Psychology from Calumet College.
