The Department of Modern Languages aims to equip students with foreign language skills and cultural understanding and sensitivity that prepare them for graduate studies, employment, and effective functioning in our culturally diverse society. The Department provides high quality instruction from the elementary through advanced levels and offers an array of language, literature, and culture courses that accommodate the various student constituencies we serve. We strive to ensure that students have a working knowledge of a second language, which is a vital practical skill needed for many careers in business, education, social services, health care, and government in Northwest Indiana and beyond.
As integral parts of Indiana University's Northwest's College of Arts and Sciences, our programs and courses enhance students' understanding of past and present human experience, broaden their awareness of peoples, places, and things on a more universal level, and compel them to think critically. Through excellence in classroom teaching, active participation in research, and professional and community service, department faculty contribute to the intellectual development of students and the vitality of Northwest Indiana. |
