General Information
This introductory Spanish Program presents an interactive approach to the
language within a cultural context. The program consists of a variety of
materials that promote functional use of the language. Each chapter of
the book is organized around a theme related to a place or situation that
is likely to be encountered by a person studying, working, or traveling
in a Spanish-speaking country. Each of the four skills of listening, speaking,
reading, and writing are given equal importance throughout the components
of this program. Cross-cultural information reflects the diversity of the
Hispanic world today.

Late arrival, early departure, eating in class and private
conversations between students is disturbing and disruptive to other members
of the class. Please be considerate of your fellow students and your instructors.
Class Attendance
As you proceed with your language study, you will discover
that class attendance is a very important part of language learning. There
is simply no substitute for the explanations, practice, and conversation
obtained in the foreign language classroom. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED IN ALL
CLASS MEETINGS PER WEEK.
Three (3) absences are allowed. Subtract three (3) points
from the semester average for each class period missed in excess of three.
Any student with additional absences due to medical reasons or other extenuating
circumstances may be excused with proper documentation. In such cases the
student should see his/her instructor on an individual basis.
Workbook Exercises
The Cuaderno de Ejercicios is designed to develop
the writing skill. It provides practice with using vocabulary and structures
in written form. It also provides practice with writing for the same purposes
as native speakers of Spanish through the completion of lists, notes, letters,
messages, and other similar writing tasks. You must complete all exercises
for each chapter in the Cuaderno de Ejercicios. You will best reinforce
what you have learned in the student textbook by completing each encuentro
in the Cuaderno just after you have completed the encuentro in the
student textbook. Generally it is not effective to wait to do the workbook
exercises until after you have completed the entire chapter.
Your instructor will collect each chapter of the Cuaderno
as indicated in the Class Calendar. Prior to handing in the Cuaderno assignment,
self-correct your work by circling the incorrect answer and writing the
correct answer by it with a different color pen. Work that is late, not
complete or not corrected will receive half credit.
Laboratory Exercises (optional)
The Manual de laboratorio is designed to develop the
listening comprehension skills and help improve pronunciation and speaking.
You can check out the tapes that correspond to each chapter at the Instructional
Media Center (Hawthorn 310). Although this is not a required part of the
program, you will find it very useful if you need to emphasize the oral
skills.
Encuentros CD-ROM
Develops the speaking and listening comprehension skills.
Helps improve pronunciation and speaking. The mechanical exercises are
developed to help acquire vocabulary and grammar structures.
In every chapter of Encuentros there will be a
quiz based on the mystery adventure you have been following in your CD-ROM.
The exercises will be very similar to those you do after listening to the
dialogue.
Compositions
The "Para escribir bien" sections at the end of each chapter
offer a series of strategies to help you communicate through writing. Read
them carefully and choose one of the two topics suggested for your composition.
You will write your first draft in class. Follow the observations on your
first draft when you write your second and final draft in class.
Final Exam
The final exam will be comprehensive. Students with and average
grade of 83 or higher and no more than three (3) absences will not be required
to take the final exam.
Spanish Tutors
You can take advantage of the extra help made available to
you by the Department. Contact a Spanish tutor as soon as you feel you
are falling behind. You can contact your instructor to get a list of the
Spanish tutors or you can go directly to the Language Lab (Library 130)
during regular tutorial hours.
Grade Determination for S100 and S200

Four (4) chapter exams at 100 points each. Five exams will
be given. Your instructor will drop the lowest score. If you miss one exam,
the score for the missed exam will be the one dropped. THERE ARE
NO MAKE-UP EXAMS.
