Placement Test All incoming students should take the Mathematics Placement Test. Placement testing and counseling is available in HH108. Please call 219-980-6601 to schedule an appointment. The test helps to determine whether a student takes a math refresher course, a developmental course, or some other course offered by the Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Sciences. It is recommended to click on the following link and print practice test A, practice test B, or practice test C. Working on provided examples before taking the actual Placement Test may help.
Students in college-level mathematics courses are generally assumed to have completed two years of high school algebra. Those unable to do mathematics at this level should begin with either a math refresher course (former M 6), M 7 (elementary algebra), or M 14 (basic algebra).
After you take the placement test, it will indicate several math courses that you are ready for. You should consult with your advisor about which of these math courses will lead to fulfilling your math requirement. Prior to registering on-line, students need departmental permission to enroll in a math class, so please call the Math Department Program Coordinator, Mary Beth Mitchell at (219) 981-5691, to get that permission.
The order in which the courses should be taken is shown in the following chart:
Students who need a math refresher course now have two options: 1) Register for Ivy Tech Community College algebra preparatory class, MAT044 that meets here, on the IU Northwest campus. This course is the best preparation for the M 7 class. Students who wish to enroll in MAT044 should see Mary Beth Mitchell, Program Coordinator for the Department of Mathematics in HH447, Phone 219-981-5691. You must come to the Math Department to complete the enrollment forms for MAT044. 2) Register for the Adult Education Mathematics preparatory program. It meets twice a week for twelve weeks during the term. All classes will be held in one of the computer labs; students will be using a software program ALEKS, designed for students who only need a quick review of basic arithmetic skills. (Cost of the course: FREE). Contact the Division of Continuing Studies, 980-6828 or Cathy Hall in the Special Retention Program Office (HH425) 981-4296. Click to download application form.
