Placement Test
All incoming students should take the
Mathematics Placement Test. Placement testing and counseling is
available in Admissions Office (219) 980-6991. Please call
to schedule an appointment. It is recommended to click on the
following link and print practice
test A,
practice test B, or
practice test C. Working on provided examples before taking the
actual Placement Test may help.
The placement test will indicate several
math courses that you are ready for. You should consult with your advisor
about which of these math courses will lead to fulfilling your math
requirement. Some students will need departmental
permission to enroll in a math class. If so please call the Math Department
Program Coordinator, Mary Beth Mitchell at (219) 981-5691, to get that
permission.
The order in which the math courses should be
taken is shown in the following chart:
1 M 7 – M 14. Developmental courses for students who lack the background
in algebra
2 M100 and M110. Terminal courses for students in the humanities
and the allied health sciences. Fulfill the Group I mathematics requirement
in the College of Arts and Sciences.
3 M118, M119. May be taken in either order. Primarily for majors
in business and the social sciences.
4 M125 – M126. Preparation for calculus. Need not be taken by
students with strong background in algebra (including analytic geometry and
logarithms) and trigonometry.
5 M215 Calculus. Intended for students majoring in mathematics
and the sciences. Recommended as strong elective in mathematics for others.

To students who tested
bellow M007 elementary algebra level:
Students who placed below M007 on Indiana
University Northwest’s mathematics placement test need to refresh their
pre-algebra skills. The following three options are now available to you:
1) Instead
of taking M007 (4cr.) you are allowed to take MATH A007 (2cr.) at IU
Northwest. After successfully passing this course you are allowed to take
MATH B007 (2cr.). These two courses together are taken instead of our
regular M007, but the material is covered at slow pace, over 2 semesters. In
addition to traditional lecture time students will spend time practicing
mathematics in computer lab with help. Students who pass both MATH A007 and
MATH B007 are given credit for passing MATH M007.
2) Take
computer based J010 course offered by IU Northwest Special Retention
Programs. Students may work in a computer classroom on campus with the help
of a mathematics instructor or they can access the program from other
locations, including their home computer. To register go to HH 425 or call
219- 981-4296. Students who successfully finish J010 are allowed to take
M007.
3) Take
Ivy Tech’s course MATH 015 that is 5 credit hours college preparatory
course. Call or visit Ivy Tech
to register.Successful completion of this
course will allow a student to register for M007 Elementary Algebra.
