Spring 2008

M 7 and M 14 are being taught in two different formats during the spring semester.

For those of you who are enrolled in a course listed as being taught over the World Wide Web (M 7 9:50-11:25 on MW and M 14 8:30-9:45 on TR), you will be using the ALEK’s web based learning system.  Registration for this class is done online and can be accomplished in one of two ways.  First, you may purchase an Alek’s manual from the bookstore.  It contains a supplemental workbook along with your user license which is what you will need to enroll in the class.   The second is to purchase your user license online with a credit card.  This method is significantly less expensive than the first, and generally meets the student’s need since the workbook is not used for the class. Your instructor will help you with the enrollment process on the first day of class.

For all other students, the correct text is Beginning and Intermediate Algebra by Lial, Hornsby, and McGinnis, Fourth Edition.  Tightly integrated with this textbook is MyMathLab, a web based learning tool designed to help you with your homework.  To help you understand how to work the problems, MyMathLab contains:
Immediate feedback as to whether your answer is right or wrong
Step-by-step instruction for the problems you do not understand.
Video or animated tutorials for many of the problems.
You can obtain MyMathLab conveniently in one of two ways.
Purchase a new book.  MyMathLab is included at no additional cost.

Purchase MyMathLab over the web using a credit card (cost $52.50).

Please Note:

1.       For Prof Odefey’s class (M 7 2:20-3:55 MW), MyMathLab will be required.  You will be expected to come to class the first day with either the access kit from the new book you purchased or prepared to purchase MyMathLab online.  You will be assisted with enrollment at that time.

2.       For all other students, the use of MyMathLab is optional.  If you decide to use it, see your instructor for a Course ID which you will need to enroll.

Please be advised that MyMathLab contains the textbook in electronic form.  Therefore, as long as you are connected to the web, you will have full access to the textbook from MyMathLab.  Some may find this sufficient and not require a physical textbook.  The Mathematics Department makes no recommendations!  This is an individual decision.

If you have questions, please contact Prof Odefey at wodefey@iun.edu , or the Mathematics Department secretary, Mary Beth Mitchell, at 980-6590.
