2003 Events

Dr. Bogdan Vajiac was awarded an SBC fellowship for the project: The Implementation of Computer-based Homework Approach Using the WeBWorK Program. This project proposes the installation and development of the WeBWorK system at IU Northwest. WeBWorK is an Internet-based system for generating and delivering homework problems to students; it checks automatically students’ progress and gives instantaneous feedback on the correctness of the solution.

Dr. Vesna Kilibarda, along with three students from her “Topics in Euclidean Geometry” class (Larry Hautzinger, May Lee, and Nicole Nigh) presented their research project “Escher’s Tessellations with Sketchpad” at the Indiana MAA meeting at Goshen College on October 18, 2003. Dr. Iztok Hozo, associate professor of mathematics was chosen to receive the President's Award. The President's Award was established in 1974 to recognize outstanding teaching, research or service on all of Indiana University's campuses. For more about Dr. Hozo visit:

The winner of the $50 Barnes and Noble gift card of the 2002/2003 Math Club Sponsored Monthly Contest is James Landrum. His final total was 38 out of a possible 40 points! He will be awarded the prize at this year's Arts and Sciences honor's Tea. Honorable mention goes to Matt Daiber and Brei Larson.

Professor Jon Becker presented the topic, “Overcoming Failure: Your Key to Success,” at the 2003 FACET Associate Faculty Conference, on October 17th and 18th, in Indianapolis.

Math department team won a silver medal in tug-of-war! Congratulations to the Information Technology team, who after a heroic battle won this competition
