Dr Bogdan Vajiac, Dr. Vesna Kilibarda and Dr. Henry Wyzinski obtained funding from the Center of Sustainable Regional Vitality at IUNW for their collaborative project Interventions to Improve Students' Retention in M118 Finite Mathematics Class. This project will provide internship experience for five student tutors and one work-study student. The study will analyze the success of students in all sections of M118 in the Spring 2007 semester. Variables that are being investigated are mathematics anxiety, Math Lab use, previous mathematics experience, midterm exam and final exam performance. The project was initiated in collaboration with the School of Business, as part of improving the mathematics curriculum of future business graduates.
Mary Beth Mitchell joined the
Math Department in late August, 2007. Mary Beth has over 10 years of
experience in higher education; she previously worked at Purdue
University North Central as the program coordinator in Student Support
Services, was the academic dean at Commonwealth Business College in
Merrillville, and also worked as the program coordinator for the Degree
Completion Program at Calumet College of St. Joseph. Mary Beth has both
a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology from Purdue University
and Governors State University. She also teaches statistics for behavior
sciences and has experience doing statistical analysis and research on
student retention issues. Ms. Mitchell is the Math Department
Retention/Tracking Coordinator, Math Lab supervisor and office
coordinator Basic Mathematics (M100) is going through many changes this year. Supported by General Education Course-Development Grant we are looking into data analysis driven improvement of DWF rates and curriculum that will better serve needs of specific student majors. This project, led by Kilibarda , Wyzinski and Pudar-Hozo, will affect 600 students who take this course each year.
