Promoting Your Event to the Media

Are you planning an event at IU Northwest? If so, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Do you want people to come to the event? In other words, will it be open to the public or is it a campus event only? In either case, it can be publicized ahead of time.

If the event is open to the public, certain newspapers, radio and television stations will promote the event for free but must have the event information at least two weeks prior to the event. The information should include the event location and address, the time, cost (even if it’s free) and a phone number.

If the event is a campus event only, it can be publicized on campus web site, e-mail listservs and through the use of flyers and posters. To find out how the OMC can help you with your event, please visit our marketing services and media relations pages.

In addition to publicity, the event may be newsworthy. Is a well-known speaker coming or are you sponsoring an event about a topic that’s in the news? If so, local media may be interested.

For more information about promoting your event, contact Kim Kintz at 219-980-6802 or e-mail kkintz@iun.edu.
