Frequently Asked Questions about the Library Science Program


How do I apply?

In order to apply to the School of Library and Information Science at Indianapolis, you must fill out and submit your application online.

International students can submit and application online at http://www.iupui.edu/~oia/AD/admission_step1.html.

When applying, you must also submite a personal goals essay of at least 500 words. This is a requirement for your application process. It is encouraged to submit an essay with between 1000 to 1500 words so that you can include leadership, teamwork and technology experiences. The essay is also supposed to describe your academic and professional goals in relation to the SLIS degree program. This is part of the admission process, so it is important to include the essay in your application submission.

A personal goals essay of at least 500 words is required. We encourage an essay of 1000-1500 words to include experiences in leadership, teamwork, and technology. The essay must indicate a student's academic and profession goals appropriate to the desired SLIS degree program. The writing skills indicated in this statement are also considered as part of the admission decision. Please see the Personal Essay Question page for guidelines. You only need one essay.

What is required for a school/media and information technology certification?


Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. Requirements for an Indiana teaching license at the elementary or secondary level.
  3. Admission to the School of Library and Information Science MLS program.

The minor in school library services requiring 24 credit hours, qualifies the student for a building-level position as a professional library media specialist.

Can the classes taught at IU Northwest be used towards a Master of Library Science degree?

Yes, the classes taught at IU Northwest can be used toward the requirements for an MLS. However, no more than two courses taken before acceptance into the MLS program can be used toward this degree.

Can all the courses required for an MLS be taken at IU Northwest?

No, the core courses for the MLS are taught at IU Northwest but the full program is offered only on the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses. Many students have begun the MLS program at IU Northwest and then completed the program in Indianapolis or Bloomington traveling with fellow students to these campuses in order to make transportation easier.
