Program Special Features

  1. The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS):
    • offers the only American Library Association accredited Master of Library Science program in Indiana.
    • delivers courses using the most modern distance learning technologies, including interactive television.
    • has an NCATE-approved graduate program for school library media specialists.
    • graduates more than 150 students annually and enjoys a 95 percent placement rate within the first three months following graduation.
    • places school library media specialists in any of the fifty states.
  2. Courses offered by TV.
    • Virtual Indiana Classroom (VIC) interactive television programs use two way video and audio to allow participants to see and hear each other. All IU campuses are equipped with this technology, which can be configured to connect to video conferencing facilities nationally and internationally.
    • Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS) programs are delivered via satellite services provided by the state. IHETS uses one way video and two way audio technologies to reach 300 receive sites in Indiana and several locations outside the state. During programs students talk to the originating classrooms by telephone.
  3. The courses at IU Northwest can be applied toward a Master of Library Science (MLS) Degree if the student is admitted to the MLS program while taking the courses.

Faculty Features

The School of Library and Information Science is an American Library Association Accredited, nationally recognized school. It has an international faculty involved in research as well as teaching. The school was ranked third in the nation in the 1996 Gourman Report ranking of graduate and professional programs in library and information science.

Does IU Northwest offer classes necessary for public library certification?

Yes, classes required for public library certification are offered on the IU Northwest campus. The classes are taught in Bloomington and delivered to Northwest Indiana by means of television.

What is required for a school/media and information technology certification?

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. Requirements for an Indiana teaching license at the elementary or secondary level.
  3. Admission to the School of Library and Information Science MLS program.

The minor in school library services requiring 24 credit hours, qualifies the student for a building-level position as a professional library media specialist.

Can the classes taught at IU Northwest be used towards a Master of Library Science degree?

Yes, the classes taught at IU Northwest can be used toward the requirements for an MLS. However, no more than two courses taken before acceptance into the MLS program can be used toward this degree.

Can all the courses required for an MLS be taken at IU Northwest?

No, the core courses for the MLS are taught at IU Northwest but the full program is offered only on the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses. Many students have begun the MLS program at IU Northwest and then completed the program in Indianapolis or Bloomington traveling with fellow students to these campuses in order to make transportation easier.
