Sandra Hall Smith - Merrillville is a progressive leader who plays a key
administrative role in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs
(SPEA). She recently finished her Graduate Certificate in
Nonprofit Management and is preparing to apply to the MPA program at
IU Northwest. Sandra's drive to mentor youth has led her to work
with several youth groups in the community. She is committed
member of her church where she serves as a licensed missionary. Sandra's passion and dedication to her sons have allowed them to

Mark Hansen – Hebron works in Chicago as the Area Manager Corporate Real Estate for SBC Communications. He received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and his
MBA from IU Northwest. Mark is actively involved with his church, through singing in the choir, cantering, and playing his guitar and bass. He is also the head coach for the 7th and 8th grade soccer team at St. Mary's School in Crown Point and is the announcer for Andrean High School Women's Soccer. He is also a 4-H Administrative Leader, and Chairman of the Education and Testing Committee of the Lake Co. 4-H Horse and Pony Program. Bethany Harrison - Valparaiso is employed at U.S. Steel as a Customer Service Representative in Plate Products Inside Sales. She has a
BS in Business Administration and minors in Marketing and Communications. Bethany is very involved with her church. She sits on the Christian Education Board, is director of the youth group, spearheaded the college student program, teaches Sunday School, and leads the young adults group. The U.S. Steel New Managers Organization also occupies her time where she serves on the social committee. She is on the editorial staff and a contributing author for the U.S. Steel Plate Times. Larry Hayden – Gary is a senior studying Computer Information Systems. Larry is currently
employed at That Little Café as the manager. A faithful member of his

Brandy Hayslett - Valparaiso graduated in May 2001 with a major in French and a minor in Computer Science. She was a recipient of a full academic scholarship. She is employed at Movie Gallery, Inc. as a senior certified sales associate and also works for the Union Township Schools as an elementary school substitute teacher. Amy Hlad – Long Beach, CA is the Supervisor of Food Services at Pacific Hospital of Long Beach, California. She has served as a Loaned Executive for the Lake Area United Way and a substitute teacher for the Lake Central School Corporation. Amy has held leadership roles on campus as President of the Sociology Club and as a Supplemental Instructor for Sociology. For the past nine years, she has volunteered for various agencies including the Haven House's Rape Advocacy Program. Amy received her AS in Business Management in 1997 and her

Carrie Hobbs Guiden - Schererville has dedicated her professional career to improving
the lives of adults with developmental disabilities. As Client
Services Director at Arc BRIDGES, she oversees programs that serve
over 700 individuals. Carrie's commitment to her vocation is
further observed in her volunteer activities for the agency and in her
pursuit of higher education. She completed an MS in Special
Education and a Graduated Certificate in Non-Profit Management. Carrie maintains her work focus by taking time to travel throughout

Sheila Hurtado - Portage is a Business Administration major. Her employer is Transworld Systems, Inc. where her strong marketing background contributes to her success as an account executive. Draga Ilievski-Beckner – Valparaiso is a Social Worker, and works in the Center for Cancer Therapy at LaPorte Hospital. She serves on the Advisory Council for Daybreak Adult Day Services in Michigan City and the Domestic Violence taskforce in LaPorte. She holds professional memberships with Indiana Oncology Social Workers, Association of Oncology Social Workers (national) and National Association of Social Workers. Draga received her

Crystal Jelks – Gary received her BS in Health Services Management from IU Northwest in
December 2004. She is the Assistant Program Director for the
Institute for Innovative Leadership. Crystal is a member of Family
Christian Center in Munster. In her spare time, she is an
Independent Consultant and Team Leader with PartyLite Gifts, Inc., a
direct sales company specializing in candles and accessories.
Crystal is currently pursuing her Post Baccalaureate Certificate at
IU Northwest, with the ultimate goal of receiving her MPA in Public

Julie Johnsen – Cedar Lake received her Bachelor of Nursing in May 2002. She is employed at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point as a nurse in the neuro intensive care unit. She plans to become a critical care registered nurse by taking a certification exam. Her leadership experience includes mentoring nurse's aides, orienting new nurse's aides, and conducting study groups. Her future career objective is to pursue her graduate degree as a nurse anesthetist. Additionally, Julie was accepted into a Nurse Anesthesia program at

Arvis "AJ" Johnson - Gary is currently working on his MSW with the intention of
graduation in May 2006 while he is employed with US Steel
Midwest Division. AJ is a 1990 graduate of Rust College with a
BA in Sociology. While at Rust, he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, was a member of the President's Council and NAACP. AJ was
a coach for the Miller Soccer League for six seasons and is a licensed
baseball umpire. His favorite hobbies are playing with his four

Ernestine Ross Johnson – Merrillville recently retired from US Steel with a duel career as an Equal Employment Opportunity Specialist and Accountant. She is currently pursuing a BS at IU Northwest. Ernestine is a member of the Mizpah
Seventh-Day Adventist Church where she serves as Treasurer, a member
of the Women's Ministry Council and a member of the Chancel Choir. Ernestine founded a young women's mentoring group in her church. She has given back to the community through her outreach ministry to the Rainbow Shelter. Ernestine is in the process of founding a not-for-profit organization to benefit challenged individuals to profit services that are not presently provided for them through the government sector. Matt Johnson – Chesterton graduated in May 2003 with a BS in Business Administration and a minor in Marketing. Matt volunteers his time coaching two little league teams, and giving baseball instruction to young players. He also enjoys playing softball and volleyball. Recently he has become active with the Lupus Foundation of America, Northwest Indiana Chapter. Matt plans on pursuing a
MBA, and owning a successful property management company.

Paulina Johnson – Highland completed her
MBA Degree with highest distinction in July 2002. In addition to this, she holds a
BS in Computer Information Systems. She is employed with Ispat Inland, Inc. as an Account Representative. She is a member of Embassies of Christ Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is the proud mother of two children, Paul and Kylar. In her spare time, she writes poetry and songs. Paulina has overcome many obstacles in her life and has a passion for working with underprivileged youth. Alan Jones – Valparaiso is Vice President of The Environmental Solutions Group, Inc. in Crown Point. He received his
BS in Hydrogeology from Western Michigan University in 1994 and expects to receive his
MBA Degree in 2002. Alan is married, the father of three children, and active with the Boy Scouts and the Crown Point Chamber of Commerce. Carolyn Jones – Highland graduated May 2001 with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. She is a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Highland. Carolyn has been the chief organizer for her church bike-a-thon and has served as a rape advocate for Haven House. Her career objectives include attending graduate school for social work. LaTasha
Jones – Oak Park is
Assistant Director of the computer Ministry at Greater St. John
Bible Church. By day, LaTasha is Executive Assistant to the
Controller at Closet Works in Elmhurst, Illinois, and her evenings
are spent pursuing graduate studies at Indiana University
Northwest. LaTasha’s future goals include, but are not limited to,
becoming an attorney. She feels that nothing is unattainable for a
woman with a plan. |

Mike Jorden – Hammond is a First Class Patrolman for the Hammond Police Department where he serves as an Accident Investigator and Standard Field Sobriety Instructor. He has recently accepted an assignment as a full time instructor at the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy here at IU Northwest. Mike graduated in May 2002 with his
MPA. He and his wife, Candace, are the proud parents of their new son, John. Mike enjoys reading and has a passion for golf. He serves as the President of the Hammond Fraternal Order of Police, where he is honored to be the youngest President in the history of the lodge. Brenda Joshua – East Chicago is a life long learner. Since retirement from AT&T, Brenda has earned an AS in Health Information
Technology and a BS in Health Services Management. Jennifer Kandalec – Schererville received her BA in Sociology with a minor in History at IU Northwest
in 2001
and her MSW from Loyola University Chicago in 2004. She is currently working toward her doctoral degree in Sociology
and teaching sociology at Loyola. Jen was co-chair of Loyola's Graduate Association of Sociologists,
co-organized an ethnography conference, presented papers at several
conferences, and served on panels at the North Central Sociological
Association. She is also very active in her church volunteering for the nursery, vacation bible school, the bread ministry, records keeping, missionary work (Alaska)
and the board of evangelism. Jen enjoys being an avid reader, pianist, artist and writer

Marijana
Kaufman – Crown
Point is a
senior studying Political Science. She previously attended Prairie
State College, where she was active in Student Leadership and earned
a Student Leadership Award. Marijana spends her spare time studying
and preparing for law school. She is also the President of the
International Affairs Club. Her objectives include attending law
school and possibly becoming a Senator. Marijana hopes that her
life touches others’ lives and changes the world and makes it a
better place. |

Irene
Kersh – Valparaiso is pursuing her Masters of Social work degree, with
concentration in Mental Health and School Social Work. She will
graduate in May, 2007. She received her B.A. degree with a double
concentration in Political Science and Afro-American Studies in
1982. She is a case manager in Child Welfare Services with the
Department of Child Services. She is very active in fundraising
projects at her daughter’s school: South Haven Christian School. Her long term goal is to operate her own business. |

Mike Kessie – Bradenton, FL retired from the Schererville Police Department in May 2002 where he served in a variety of leadership positions for over 22 years including Deputy Chief. He and his wife also moved to Bradenton, Florida in May 2002. Mike received his degree, graduating with honors, from

Arlene King – Hanson, KY had been a health care provider for over 19 years in positions ranging from indirect patient care service to administration. She has earned her

Kozak – St. John is the
Manager of the Outpatient Registration Department at Community
Hospital, enjoys Leadership Development and its workplace
applications. She was recently promoted, and now is the manager of a
staff of 15 at 3 different locations. She received her B.S. in
Environmental Science from Governors State University in 1981, and
is now pursuing her M.P.A. Janet is the mother of two sons. She
and her husband own their own business, and she is also involved in
many church activities and ministries. Her long term professional
goal is to become a senior healthcare administrator. Janet loves

Dyke Edward Lee – Gary is an International and State Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. Dyke is employed full-time with Edgewater Systems for Balanced Living as an Addiction Therapist. He is the Executive Pastor of Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church and serves on the Community Development Corporation Board of Directors. Dyke is a member of the Masonic Lodge and serves as Past Master of Joppa Lodge #1, Deputy Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Son of Light Grand Lodge and District Deputy Grand Master for the United States Supreme Council for Indiana. Anita
Lewis – Hammond expects
to graduate in May, 2007 with a Master’s degree in Social Work. She
is employed at the School City of East Chicago as a substitute
teacher at the high school level. She is a member of Phi Alpha (the

National Association of Social Workers. She has also signed on as a
volunteer at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond. In the past, she has

Brock Lloyd - Valparaiso is a Commercial Banker specializing in the Public Sector for Fifth
Third Bank. Brock is a member of the Valparaiso Jaycees. He also has
tutored for Working in the Schools (WITS) and Junior Achievement. He has a BS in Finance
with a Minor in Mathematics from Valparaiso University and his MBA
from IU Northwest. Brock loves to golf and hang out with his wife and

Crescendo Lobdell – Gary graduated in May 2002 with a
MSW. She served as president of Phi Alpha, a national honor society for MSW students, and was selected as the Outstanding Social Work Student of the year 2002. She was previously employed as a Child Welfare worker and has worked extensively with abused and neglected children. She is currently employed by the Crisis Center as a Counseling Coordinator and Residential Therapist. Melinda Lunghofer – Valparaiso is the Managing Director of
Development for the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center. Melinda received her
BS in Music from DePauw University and is currently pursuing her MPA
at IU Northwest. She also enjoys her role of chauffer, cheerleader, home piano teacher, and dedicated Mom to her two children. Her spare time is spent with her church choir and experimenting with faux finishes on the walls of
