What is the Leadership Institute?The Institute for Innovative Leadership is a partnership between IU Northwest and Northwest Indiana's community and business leadership throughout all sectors. The program is designed to create a binding link between educational experience and leadership practice. What is the purpose of the Leadership Development Program?Building leadership by linking today's community leaders with talented students who learn and grow from seasoned wisdom, practiced skills, guided introspection, observed modeling and broadened experience. Who can participate?Students must apply and be selected in a competitive process. Juniors, seniors and graduate students from all divisions are eligible to apply. The program is open to anyone who is characterized as an individual who has high potential, is goal-oriented, and is a high achiever. Individuals demonstrating leadership, vision, and motivation are prime candidates for acceptance into the Institute. Nominations are often made by faculty and staff. What is the commitment?Each student accepted into the Institute will participate for two consecutive semesters of activities to complete the program. No academic credit is granted, yet there are no tests, required readings or homework. There are no fees for the program if you are enrolled at IU Northwest as a degree-seeking student. What is the schedule of activities?Weekly Meetings-every other week a community leader will speak to the Institute students on leadership issues. Guest faculty and staff will host the event and share experiences and expertise. Special Programs & Training-sessions designed to build specific skills and address targeted topics will be offered while involving other segments of IU Northwest and Northwest Indiana leadership. Small Groups & Mentoring-each student will be assigned a mentor for growth, guidance and contacts. Discussions will be frequently held allowing individual exploration and understanding. What are the benefits of this program to members?Participants in the program will have opportunities to receive guidance from recognized professionals and highly successful leaders and join a network of business and professional contacts. Students will gain valuable practical information and insights while increasing confidence and understanding of personal skills and abilities. Upon graduation a student will continue to enjoy involvement in services and activities of the Institute. How do I apply to the Leadership Development Program?An application packet can be picked up at Sycamore Hall, Room 314, or one will be sent to you upon request by calling the office at 981-5631. All applications are due on or before June 15 for the fall semester or November 15 for the spring semester. Interviews are conducted after applications are processed.
