Student Technology Fee Committee Press Release March 27, 2003The Student Technology Fee Committee and Donald L. Steward,
Vice Chancellor for Information Technology at Indiana University Northwest
are pleased to announce the 2003 results of the Student Technology Fee
internal grant competition.
Nine grant requests were received. Six requests were awarded full funding, one request was awarded partial funding, one request was deferred for further information, and one request was denied. A total of $31,915 was awarded for computers and associated equipment. The Accounting and Business Student Organization through their faculty advisor, Professor Jim Thomas was awarded $872 for a computer that will replace an older student-use computer. The computer will be used to create meeting flyers, manage an organizational website, and database functions to further improve student project coordination. The Computer Information Systems department through chair Bill Dorin was awarded up to $9,000 to furnish a CIS Networking and Tutor Lab. This lab will be used in a number of CIS classes allowing assembly and disassembly of computer workstations, building small office networks, and teaching network management and network security classes. The School of Business and Economics through Ranjan Kini was awarded $3,068 for data mining software that can be used by several departments to improve understanding of data mining techniques by faculty and students. The Psychology Department, through Mark Hoyert has been awarded $872 for a computer to be used by students in the Learning Laboratory Data Analysis Project. Student use of this computer for other Psychology Department tasks will be explored. The Anthropology / Sociology Department through Bob Mucci has been awarded a desktop computer and special software valued at $2,298 to partially fund their grant request. The balance of the equipment request is being submitted to the Academic Equipment Committee for action. The Library, through two grant requests from Nicholas Rosselli, was awarded $10,469 for 12 computers to replace old computers used for Online Public Access Catalog stations. These OPAC computers are also used to search a variety of electronic databases offered by the library, to use the Internet, to access electronic reserve materials, to utilize Oncourse, and for word processing. The second Library grant approved for $5,336 will replace the Electronic Reserve Information System (ERIS) equipment and the Ariel inter-library loan equipment. This grant will provide improved reserve and inter-library loan service to our students. The School of Education grant proposal for pre and post testing software was placed on hold pending a discussion of how best to provide this service or possibly expand or reconfigure this grant while maintaining the integrity of the Student Technology Centers. The Geosciences Department (Tim Fisher) request for funds was denied
because Classroom Improvement Funds allocated under the Information
Technology Strategic Plan could fund the classroom renovations requested
by this grant. |
