Rights and Responsibilities Statement

Below is the Rights and Responsibilities Statement that must be agreed to in order to obtain a Network ID. There is no place on this page to click to agree to the statement. Information is taken from the statement for reference.

Welcome to the IU Computing Network!

Many exciting services are available to you in this growing collection of information and resources.

To be entrusted with a computer account, users of the Indiana University computing networks must accept certain responsibilities and agree to use their accounts in accordance with certain standards. These are listed below; please read them.

If you agree to accept these responsibilities, follow the instructions to proceed. You will see this responsibility statement only once, but it applies to all IU computing resources.

If you do not choose to accept these responsibilities, you cannot create computing accounts. You are welcome to log in again at any time in the future to review the statement. You can find a more thorough description of the responsibilities that accompany your account in the document "Computer User's Privileges and Responsibilities" available from the UITS Support Center, IMU 084.

Please read this statement carefully.

Responsibilities of the User and Standards for Account Usage

I agree to the following:

Institutional purposes

I agree to use IU computing resources only for purposes related to the university's mission of education, research, and public service. I will not use my account for private business purposes unrelated to the mission of the university.

Security

I agree to make correct and sufficient use of the tools each computer system provides for maintaining the security and confidentiality of information stored on it. I will not share my account passphrase with others; I will use the tools supplied with the computer system to protect the privacy of my files; and I will take steps to understand computer viruses and other destructive software and to protect my own and others' computer accounts from such threats.

I will carefully review the nature of the material that I am displaying on web pages or placing in network-accessible directories. I understand that without appropriate controls, all of this material is accessible by anyone, from anywhere on the Internet. I further understand that violations of individual or institutional privacy are very possible via this medium, if care is not taken to ensure that sensitive data is adequately protected.

I know that once the information is discovered and extracted, it's impossible to repair the damage caused by such a wide-spread release of sensitive material. I understand that it is my responsibility to understand the level of security provided in the Web server environment at any given time, and for making decisions about acceptable risk versus the real business need to display the information.

Legal usage

I will use my account only for legal purposes. I will not harass others; I will not damage equipment, software, or data belonging to others; I will not knowingly monitor or disrupt the electronic communications of others; and I will not violate software copyrights or license agreements.

Ethical usage

I will use my account in accordance with the high ethical standards of the university community. I will not violate computer system security; I will not make unauthorized use of computer accounts, access codes, or network identification numbers assigned to others; I will not use computer telecommunication facilities in ways that unnecessarily impede the computing activities of others. I will not use my computer account for Academic dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating), nor will I use it in violation of network usage policies and regulations or in violation of another user's privacy.

Facilitative usage

I will use my account in such a way as to facilitate computing in the IU environment. I will regularly delete unneeded files from my accounts on central machines; I will refrain from overuse of connect time, information storage space, printing facilities, or processing capacity; and I will refrain from overuse of interactive network utilities (such as BITNET conference relays).

Sanctions

I understand that failure to use IU computing resources as described above will be dealt with seriously. I understand that violators will be subject to the normal disciplinary procedures of the university and, in addition, the loss of computing privileges may result. And I understand that illegal acts involving IU computing resources may also be subject to prosecution by state and federal authorities.

Statement of Agreement

If you do not agree to use your accounts as described above, please use the BACK button on your browser to leave this area of the web. You are welcome to log in again at any time in the future and review the statement.
