Technology Council Minutes

April 13,  2001

A review of the past Technology Council actions was discussed and all agreed that most actions taken were in response to specific actions or situations that arose. I stated that I would prefer to move into a more proactive direction in creating policies.

Don Steward passed out current policies from the Instructional Media Services and Technical Services areas. And the FAQ from Microcomputer support. He asked for comments and suggestions.
The faculty resolution on computer software compliance was discussed and adopted. A discussion followed on what "reasonable time" means and it was agreed that two weeks was reasonable time. Dr. Steward proposed IT follows the steps in the resolution with a small modification -- After distributing the IU Northwest Computer Users guidelines to faculty and staff and instructions to the deans were made, he would accept invitations from deans and department heads to perform the inspection in Step 1. If an inspection invitation was not received from a dean or director within a month, ITS would contact the department and inform them of a visit date. Shareware will not be made an issue for this inspection.

A draft printer policy was distributed and discussed. It was agreed that the policy should be vetted around the departments and a decision would be made at the next meeting. There was consensus about the abandonment of inkjet printers in favor of laser printers when the supplies expenses were discussed. Still on the table is possibly supplying a limited number of color laser printers and how many laser printers a department or division would be provided with.

Recent actions in the Student Technology Fee committee were discussed. A call for proposals for using STF funds is going out next week.

It was decided that meetings would be held monthly on either Tuesday at 3:30 PM or Wednesday at 10:00 AM during the week following the Computer Center Directors meeting (first Friday of each month).

The next meeting will be Tuesday May 8, 2001 at 10:00 AM. The location will be announced later. All material passed out will be mailed to Technology Council members who were absent.

If there are any additions or corrections, please e-mail me.
